Driven by passion, creativity, and community, student dancers take center stage in a performance <\/span>ready to light up the Toyota Arena<\/span><\/h2>\n

When the music starts at the Ontario Reign ice hockey halftime show on Tuesday,\u00a0the Â鶹ÊÓƵ;Verne Dance Team will take center stage in one of their biggest performances yet.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>For the dancers, this is more than a routine; it\u2019s the result of late-night practices, creative collaboration, and a shared passion that brings together students from across campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe dance for each other,\u201d said team captain Taylor Fukunaga, who helps choreograph the team\u2019s hip-hop pieces. \u201cWe train together, we work together, and at the end of the day, we\u2019re one big team. I hope people can see that when we perform.\u201d <\/span>That sense of unity is at the heart of the ULV Dance Team experience that prioritizes connection. <\/span><\/p>\n

For Emily Saldivar, a senior and team captain, the upcoming performance carries even more meaning: it will be her final time performing with the team.<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s not about being the most technical dancer,\u201d said Saldivar. \u201cYou just have to bring your passion and your dedication. That\u2019s what we value most. I\u2019m excited to perform on the ice. It\u2019s such a different experience,and to have my family there, my friends\u2026 it\u2019s really special.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ontario Reign performance will feature original choreography and a mix of nostalgic, high-energy music designed to connect with a wide audience. \u201cI think people should expect something really dynamic,\u201d Saldivar said. \u201cThe choreography is creative, and it\u2019s something we haven\u2019t done before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For many dancers, the performance is also a chance to showcase their own creative voices. Jeniyah McCarty, a legal studies major and captain, contributed choreography to this year\u2019s routine. \u201cI dance because it lets me express my feelings,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to explain emotions sometimes, but through dance, you can just feel it. I\u2019m really excited for people to see what we\u2019ve created.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>During rehearsals, dancers work together to merge different styles and ideas into one cohesive performance. \u201cThere was a moment in practice where everything just clicked,\u201d McCarty said. \u201cWe had different visions, but they came together seamlessly. That\u2019s when I knew this was going to be really good.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, the team balances demanding rehearsals with academics, jobs, and campus involvement. Many members rely on careful scheduling and discipline to make it all work. \u201cIt\u2019s all about time management,\u201d said Brianna Valdez, a freshman on the team. \u201cWe\u2019re constantly planning, studying in between everything, but once we\u2019re in practice, we give it 100 percent.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Even with the challenges, dancers say the experience is deeply rewarding. \u201cI joined to meet new people and stay involved,\u201d said Kevlyn Martinez, a returning sophomore member. \u201cBut it\u2019s become so much more than that. It\u2019s shaped my college experience and helped me grow more confident.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For others, dance serves as both an outlet and a sense of home. \u201cI\u2019ve been dancing my whole life,\u201d said Bre Symone, a recent team captain. \u201cBeing on this team gives me a space to be myself and just escape for a little while. It\u2019s something that\u2019s always been mine.\u201d <\/span>That sense of belonging is echoed across the team, where friendships often turn into something closer to family. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a sisterhood,\u201d said Maylah Chanel, a recently appointed team captain. \u201cWe support each other, we grow together, and performing together is one of the best feelings.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As the team prepares to take the stage, excitement continues to build, not just for the performance itself, but for what it represents.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Performing at a professional arena like the Ontario Reign game offers a rare opportunity to showcase the importance of the arts at ULV and beyond. \u201cThis is about more than just us,\u201d Martinez said. \u201cIt\u2019s about representing our team and our university, and showing people what we can do.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Fukunaga, the experience comes down to something simple. \u201cI dance because it brings me joy,\u201d she said. \u201cNo matter what\u2019s going on, when I\u2019m dancing, I feel like myself.\u201d\u00a0And when the music hits, everything else fades away. \u201cYou stop thinking,\u201d she added. \u201cYou just perform.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
